Club members arranged to meet for a sunrise shoot at Caister-on-Sea on the Norfolk coast.
The meet time was 06:30 so that meant an 05:30 rise and shine, ouch! And it was dark when we parked up, so we got our wellies and head torches on to head onto the beach.
About Caister beach
Caister beach, on the east coast of Norfolk, is very much in the shadow of the much more popular and lively Great Yarmouth Beach. It also doesn’t possess the Victorian appeal of the more picturesque Gorelston beach both of which are a little bit further down the south coast.
Caister is an extremely long beach, stretching for miles, backed by sand dunes and sea defences. It is a sandy beach, but does also have a lot of pebbles.
Photographic options
This beach is renowned for its zigzag shaped sea defences, which, over the years, have disappeared then reappeared from the sand over time. When they do appear, they make great foreground interest.
Below is a shot from 2019:
On the horizon, the wind turbines of Scroby Sands are visible which can provide some interesting shots, both as background interest or up close via a telephoto lens.
The beach does have some rocks and some posts along the shoreline which are also focal points.
Shots in the bag
There was some good sunrise light, not epic but very nice and while some of the guys moved around at pace nabbing different compositions, I stayed in the same spot all morning.
Although this was a little lazy, I wasn’t in the mood to rush around, and I was enjoying chatting to fellow photographers while taking in the early morning light and scene in front of me.
The shot below has a painterly feel which is a common style and look I like to output, with Nigel Danson being my inspiration:
I then concentrated on getting some action from the incoming waves:
As we left the beach, I got the Fuji out and took the following shots handheld:
All in all, an enjoyable morning of photography, chit chat socialising capped off with Ronald’s finest on the way home!
Onwards and upwards…
