We met up with friends at Plantation Garden in Norwich which I had heard a lot about but had never been before.

About the Garden

The Plantation Garden is a restored town garden located off Earlham Road, Norwich, Norfolk. The garden is maintained by volunteers and is located on the site of a former quarry.

As of 2021, visitors are asked to pay £2 to visit the garden, which is open daily throughout the year.

The garden includes a ‘Gothic‘ fountain, flower beds, lawns, woodland walkways, rustic bridge, Italianate terrace, ‘Medieval’ terrace wall; and hundreds of architectural details fashionable in the mid 19th century.

This idiosyncratic creation was described by The Telegraph as “a tycoon’s folly.

Walkabout with EDC

As this was a casual snap type of visit, I took my every day camera (EDC), the Fuji X100V.

The first sight you’ll see as you wander in is the amazing fountain. my first shot was of the fountain with a bench as the foreground interest.

The fountain is a superb sight

The built-in ND filter of the Fuji was activated in order to enable me to drop the shutter speed an achieve some blur in the water.

Below is an image which I’ve converted to black and white, which I think makes the fountain quite striking.

Ooh, dramatic! Works well as a Mono

Near to the fountain, the terrace has a gorgeous array of flowers.

Lovely flora all around the garden

These next two flower shots are very nice indeed.

The first one is a Cosmos.

Cosmos

Cosmos is a genus, with the same common name of cosmos, consisting of flowering plants in the sunflower family.

The next flower is a Symphyotrichum.

Symphyotrichum – a member of the Aster family

Symphyotrichum is a genus of over 100 species and naturally occurring hybrids of herbaceous annual and perennial plants in the composite family Asteraceae, most which were formerly treated within the genus Aster.

The majority are endemic to North America, but several also occur in the West Indies, Central and South America, as well as in eastern Eurasia.

Several species have been introduced to Europe as garden specimens, most notably New England aster and New York aster.

As you wander round the garden, you’ll see interesting structures at the edges. Below are some images of this structures.

Plenty of interest in structures and textures in the garden

There is a very relaxing vibe in this garden and it was a warm day on our visit with a few people wandering around, and others either sitting on a bench or laying on the grass.

It’s something of a gem to have this garden so close to the city of Norwich, and we could see why it is popular.

Another place to come back to again soon.

Onwards and upwards…
