A fellow photographer and I visited Iken in Suffolk on a bank holiday Monday evening for sunset.

I had never been to this location but know it’s in Justin Minn’s Photographing East Anglia book.

We parked at a car park at the back of Snape Maltings and walked down a path the along a boardwalk.

I could see the first two dead trees that make such good subjects here.

We stopped along the boardwalk to photograph the first tree.

I took my time selecting a composition I really liked.

My first shot

I wanted the boardwalk to stretch along the foreground of the scene, and the branches of this tree fo stretch out into the sky whilst capturing the evening sun.

I have to say I lucked out with the starburst.

We walked further on and passed another two interesting tree which we would save for later on.

We arrived at a tree for which we had to climb into and through some reeds to get to a spot we could photograph it from.

At this tree, I took a few shots from different spots but didn’t like anything I captured.

On top of that, the reeds were swarming with small midgies that were attacking us like crazy. I could feel them everywhere despite covering myself up as best I could. It felt like they were in my hair as well as biting my hands and face.

My fellow photographer braving the midgies

We walked back up along the path and stopped at what I think is one of the most popular trees here.

While I got some closer shots of this tree, I quite enjoyed the following composition.

Overhang

We went back to the tree we passed by earlier in the evening and the light was a little softer and more favourable now.

I took the opportunity to shoot a long exposure and I’m really happy with the image.

Nikon Z9, 14-30mm@18mm, f/18, 90s, ISO 32

I have enhanced the image using a Nik Color Efex filter.

I have subsequently done a mono conversion which I think it great as well.

Mono version

We wandered back to the car very pleased with exploring this location, which I hope to return to in the near future.

Onwards and upwards…
