As is the custom of recent years, this blog post shows my nine best liked photos from Instagram. I’m also going to look at the most liked on VERO too.

What I was surprised to note was that none of my Scotland images made it. Perhaps this represents that most of my followers are local to East Anglia.

Best 9 according to Instagram likes

Top 3 most liked shots

My top three liked photos from Instagram are below:

Seals from Winterton and Blakeney alongside a Cromer shot make to Top 3

The pair of seals from Winterton collected 520 likes which is somewhat amazing given I usually max out at around 100.

The upright seal was taken on a club boat trip at Blakeney Point, and clearly seal photos are to a lot of viewers’ liking.

The third placed shot is a stormy afternoon shot of Cromer Pier. That trip also saw my first attempts at Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) shots. We also visited the Banksy art there too.

Shots 4-6 Most Liked

Both fourth and fifth most liked shots were from an amazing club sunrise trip to Bawdsey.

The sixth shot is from a very late in the day winter trip to Caister-on-Sea. Some club members had reported that some of the groynes previously sunken in the sand had now reappeared.

This shot was one of only three I took where it was literally 15 minutes from darkness. For a shot taken in a hurry, it’s worked really well. It may well have to be considered for a free choice entry to POTY.

Shots 7-9 Most Liked

It’s nice to see three windmill shots all in the best nine.

Shot 7 is from the recent club sunrise trip to How Hill.

Shot 8 is an late spring evening in passing shot at Horsey Windpump. We were late getting out and decided to call in at Horsey.

The evening sky was amazing and my wife Kathryn suggested I grab this shot of the mill from the roadside.

We started to walk up to Brograve Mill but the light was dropping so we gave up half way up the path and went back to the car.

The ninth most liked shot is from a club sunrise shoot at Cley Mill.

I was pleased with the shots I got on this trip, particularly as the weather turned quite quickly on this morning and we would’ve all got soaked had we not headed back to the car park.

It’s all very well being hipster and looking at what Instagram likes show. What about VERO, or my own favourites?

VERO

The grid below are the nine highest votes from VERO:

Best 9 from VERO (Mid-August 2022 to end Dec 2022)

Comparing VERO to Instagram is probably not fair, not least because I didn’t join the former until mid-August 2022 so two thirds of my published shots from 2022 haven’t been seen on there.

This is a shame actually as I’d be really interested to see the different audience opinions, as I’m now dual-posting my shots on Instagram and VERO, I’ll be able to do this comparison next year.

However, I think it’s interesting anyway. Instagram having a broader and more social media savvy audience whereas VERO is predominantly used by photographers.

Four of the top nine have boats in the scene.

The top three are from North Wales (Cwm Idwal) and Suffolk: Aldeburgh and Pin Mill.

The middle three see Suffolk shots dominate (Flatford and Aldeburgh respectively) alongside my sea eagle shot from Scotland.

The last three are from North Wales (Watkin Path), Suffolk (Aldeburgh) and Norfolk (How Hill).

It’s been very interesting to see which shots were most popular. It also gives me some things to think about regarding potential entries into club competitions.

I shall write another blog post looking back at 2022 with my personal favourites and a wider perspective on my photography during the last year irrespective of social media.

Onwards and upwards…
