After I had watched Nigel Danson’s Sunday video, we decided on a late Sunday trip to Cromer. I got my camera gear ready and decided to take the travel tripod, which turned out to be useful…
The idea was to try some intentional camera movement (ICM) shots. Nigel had given some tips on technique so as we walked along the promenade, I gave it a try. I was actually taken back at the pleasant results and how easy it was once you get the setting and panning movement working together.
As we wandered further along the promenade up to the pier, I skipped any views of the pier (no point with people on it) or the classic shot from the beach just under the pier. I did have to take one of the pier which I’ve done loads but it just draws you in.
With the late afternoon light fading, my wife Kathryn walked briskly up ahead as she wanted to see the Banksy. While she continued along the promenade path, I hopped onto the beach and did a couple more ICM shots. I quite liked these two shots…
After a couple of shots of the Banksy picture, we headed back.
It was now into late blue hour and the pier looked really nice with the lights reflecting in the sand. I switched to a wide angle lens and went back on the beach, set up my tripod and took some shots.
When posting on Instagram, a club member messaged me to say he thought it was a great shot and I should consider entering it into the club POTY competition. This interested me as I didn’t think the shot was anything special!
Not that Instagram is any reliable guide, but the picture had amazing feedback with more likes in one week than any of my shots from last year! And yet I still don’t think it’s anything “wow”! Guess that reinforces the point that we all see something different in shots and that personal taste comes into play.
Edit: A friend of mine who I bumped into subsequent to this blog post also commented that he and his wife loved the Cromer pier shot. This made me smile. It has led to me re-editing the image and putting it up on my shop. Let’s test this out in the wild!
Onwards and upwards…
