With geography being my worst subject at school, I hadn’t realised that being on the Isle of Mull meant that we were visiting the Inner Hebrides.

With the later part of our holiday moving us to Harris and Lewis, that would mean visits to both Inner and Outer Hebrides. Pretty cool.

On the day we arrived, we drove up to Tobermory as a trip to Mull cannot be done without viewing the colourful row of houses so recognisable, mostly due to the children’s TV programme Balamory which is based there.

This was our first experience of the roads on Mull, and although the road from Craignure ferry port going East has plenty of A style roads, the rest are single track road with passing places aplenty.

Care needs to be taken to look ahead and determine if you’re to stop or the car ahead is going to stop for you.

As we arrived in Tobermory and hunted for a car parking space (another occasion we both said that we’d hate to be here in peak season), the weather was grotty with lots of cloud and that misty type of rain that doesn’t look much but quickly soaks you.

I took the classic shot of the colourful houses but thanks to the weather and my laziness in looking for something really good, it was nothing to write home about.

I’ve an attempted set of shots from my camera for a pano creation later if I can be bothered. In the meantime, here’s one below from my iPhone

In-between rain showers, we walked around the harbour and along the houses and shops. The bakery there was amazing with fresh bread rolls and I had the most amazing cake.

Jammy dodger cake, OMG, I think Kathryn couldn’t believe my repeated “Hmms” as I took large bites out of it. As it was a big slab of cake, I did manage to keep some for later.

My favourite shots were actually one looking back at the harbour (a composition Kathryn had spotted) and a simple view out of the harbour.

In the knowledge that Mull has very few pubs and restaurants, we bought some supplies, and left Tobermory for our accommodation in Craignure.

With our next two days on booked boat trips (puffins and sea eagles the targets respectively), and the weather forecast very favourable, we were excited to be on Mull.

Onwards and upwards…
