As a stop over to break up the journey to Scotland, we stayed at Heysham right next to Morecambe.
The accommodation was better quality vs price than what we found online for Morecambe itself, and from Heysham, Morecambe beach was within walking distance.
A wander down to the beach at Morecambe saw an amazing promenade stretching for miles ahead.
Our impressions were good as the promenade is modern, clean and really wide. This makes for an ideal place for walkers, running, cyclists, and anyone else.
The warm sunshine and sea air made for a very relaxing and chilled start to our trip.
The tide was in at this time and I got a couple of nice shots of these paddle boarders.
This was followed by some shots of groyne posts.
The weather was sunny and warm and fast becoming a bad habit now is getting sunburnt at the start of our holiday!
I got some shots of a dog chasing a thrown ball and returning in to its owner. Nothing to write home about photographically, but just fun to try a faster shutter speed from distance.
I then got a shot looking across the beach to the fairground ride and the famous art-deco hotel The Midland.
Aside from the reflection of the hotel in the water on the beach, I liked the fact that a fairground ride is in the scene too. A sense of the old and the new maybe?
We enjoyed walking along the pier where there are various sculptures of birds and great views either side.
I spent quite a bit of time taking shots of the anchored boats, trying hard to make the channel in the sand as much of a leading line as I could.
On the opposite side of the pier, I took this shot looking across the beach with one or two figures and a seagull which I hope emphases the scale of the vast beach.
The final stop for photos was something you absolutely must do if you visit Morecambe.
This is the statue in tribute to comedian Eric Morecambe, he of Morecambe and Wise fame.
Online Wiki: The Statue of Eric Morecambe in Morecambe, Lancashire, England is a commemorative bronze sculpture of Eric Morecambe (1926–1984) by Graham Ibbeson. It was unveiled by the Queen in July 1999. It depicts Morecambe in his “Bring Me Sunshine” pose and overlooks Morecambe Bay.
There were some great shots to be had here but you had to take them quickly as there was a steady stream of people taking selfies and group shots with Eric.
A trip to a seafront hostelry for some drinks and food, and we decided to meander back to the accommodation. With 18,000+ steps recorded on the FitBit, it was a fantastic and relaxing start to our holiday.
Onwards and upwards…
